Title: Drakensberg Mountains

Family holidays were an annual nightmare with what seemed like an endless drive from Johannesburg to Durban, the family packed into the car with my chain-smoking and tuneless whistling father at the wheel and closed windows ensuring that we all shared his habit. It was suffocating in every sense. The trauma continues. We would eventually hit the Drakensberg mountains, indicating that Durban was not too far away and that we’d soon be free to get into our swimming gear, head for the beach and experience the huge waves, treacherous currents and the threat of hungry sharks. Anything was better than the journey down. I do vaguely remember the gorgeousness of the Drakensberg and so enjoyed painting this memory (with all of its distortions).
