Course Profile: Mental Health and Older People (1-3 Days)
This course aims to provide learners with a background to Mental Health issues and conditions that have particular impact on Older People or have a tendency for later onset in life. After considering the overall process of ageing and the effect on Mental Health the group will consider specific diagnosis. Learners will have the opportunity to consider the medical and social support that is available and what particular support they could offer in their own work contexts.
The course is informed by The DSM; SCIE Guide 03; AGE UK; Mental Health Foundation; NICE guidance. The course is set in the context of the Care Act (2014), supports the Social Care Commitment and will help organisations meet the CQC Fundamental Standards.

The course is designed for Health Care, and Social Care support workers and others with no previous Mental Health training or training in this subject.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course learners should understand:

  • How ageing may affect the individual:
                Socially, Physically, Sexually, Financially, Spiritually etc.
  • The psychological impact of ageing-common issues e.g.
                Loss & Bereavement, Low self esteem, Loneliness, Helplessness, Pessimism etc.
  • How Older People are often disadvantaged e.g.
  •             Marginalisation, Stereotyping, Discrimination, Poverty, De-sexualisation
  • The impact on the individual of Infantilisation
  • How physical problems may lead to Mental Health ‘symptoms’ e.g. Constipation
  • What is Dementia and how it impacts on the person and those around them
  • What are the different Dementias and how they vary
  • The main Mental Health conditions that tend to arise in older age e.g. Depression, Anxiety
  • The signs and symptoms of a range of Mental Health conditions
  • What is the Medical Model and what it offers by way of treatment
  • What is the Social Model and the kinds of support that are available
  • What is Person Centred Support
  • What support can be offered by support workers
  • The limits of the role
  • How to decide what is ‘ordinary’ and what may be a Mental Health issue
  • The resources available
  • How to refer for more specialist help
Training methods utilised include: Tutor presentations, Role-play, Word-storming, Feedback, Discussion,  PowerPoint, Pairs work, Group work and Handouts
