about

Norman attended the Michaelis School of Fine Art (University of Cape Town) before relocating to Amsterdam and later Brighton via London. He has also lived in Turkey, Portugal and Spain. He is a prolific painter whose works are sought after by private collectors in the UK, USA, and across Europe.

Norman’s portfolio includes still life, seascapes and landscapes, but the majority of his paintings are abstract, often characterised as being ‘dark and moody’.  Utilising acrylics, he draws significant inspiration from 17th-century Dutch painting , his early years in South Africa, along with his experiences living in Funchal, Bodrum, and Palma de Mallorca; all have shaped his artistic vision.

Norman’s creative process is predominantly instinctual. He strives to avoid being influenced by intellectual concepts or conscious interpretation. Whilst it is inevitable that his work will invite analysis, he has an aversion to explaining his work, believing that the picture should say everything needed. “I know that something is working when it resonates with my own emotions. I keep going untilI I am moved by the painting experience; when I break out into a big smile, feel the tension produced by competing emotions and best of all, satisfaction with what should be incongruous techniques and application. My colour palette reflects these tensions”.
